today in futile fannish arguments
Does the HHoW episode discussion thread always go to the "poor blameless House will be destroyed by the lack of trust by those around him" place? It does, doesn't it? Sigh. I attempt to argue against this, with predictably limited success.

Elsewhere, there's the question of whether possibly-jokingly-intended allusions to a slash pairing make said pairing more or less legitimate. I, as I always do, tend to think intent is irrelevant.

Oh gosh, I saw those posts at HHow, at least the first one. All I can think of is what the hell show are they watching?

I'm glad you tried to respond, I just can't even stand to look at those types of posts, they just get me too pissed. "With a friend like Wilson, who needs enemies"? WTF???????????

I haven't been keeping up with the show, but really - with a friend like Greg House, who needs Kim Jong Il? Crazy old Korean dude with nukes would be a better person to have over for dinner.

House and Kim Jong Il would either get along frighteningly well or immediately loathe each other because the room's only big enough for *one* monumental egomaniac. *g*

It's pretty baffling. People hyper-idealizing House is one of the oddest things about the fandom, and that's saying a lot. Especially since most of them don't like Cameron very much, yet they're doing the exact thing they accuse her of. *g*

It does, doesn't it?

Apparently so.

Hee, you have a bright future in the SATSQ field. *g*

I don't usually visit the episode threads, so it was a little surprising. Of course, I've read enough posts there that it probably shouldn't have been...

LOL!

No, I just meant that I'm a born pessimist who will always see the glass as half-empty, so I don't expect those crazy folks to garner any other interpretation.

Gregory House is a saint, and we have always been at war with Eastasia. *g*

That's definitely a healthy approach to take to those folks. *g* I'm occasionally overtaken by the compulsion to argue things a little, even though I know there's no way it's going to be particularly productive. But the mood generally doesn't last too long.

House went out and got dog pee in anticipation of Wilson breaking the toilet, and then, as you said, seemed utterly unfazed by Wilson & Cuddy accusing him. I think House left the cane behind on purpose when taking the laundry in, so that Wilson would suspect him, so that House could do the dog pee trick, because House was bored and wanted to do the sneaky manipulative thing. That's my intrpretration.

PS. I realize I have a bee in my bonnet about how Cuddy does nothing to support Wilson, but didn't she throw Wilson under the bus so nicely with "Thanks for dragging me into this" after House had pwned them. Sheesh.

That'd make sense to me!

I see where that's bothersome, but I saw it differently - I know they meant that as a comic kind of comment, but to me it just points to how weirdly they've written the H/Cuddy thing. It seemed to surprise her as much as it did me that she was there for that at all - the characters are supposed to be friend-like, but her confronting him about his drug use outside of a work setting was weird and out of place. I can believe, based on this episode, that if House had been able to stay away from practicing medicine they may never have seen each other gain.

Replace "House" with "Dean Winchester" and you will feel my irritation with the Supernatural fandom. Dean is arguably a much better person than House, and I suppose I'd agree, but a lot of this fandom seems to think his shit doesn't stink. WHATEVER :/

Elsewhere, there's the question of whether possibly-jokingly-intended allusions to a slash pairing make said pairing more or less legitimate. I, as I always do, tend to think intent is irrelevant.

Can you extrapolate on this? My desire to use an unnecessarily big word aside, I sense an interesting opinion herein :D My response may be slow because LJ isn't giving me comment notifications for some reason...

Hee, well, an example from last night's House would be - House moves in with Wilson after getting out of the asylum. House makes a lot of married-couple jokes, does Wilson's laundry, and says to his therapist, "Wilson's apartment has one bedroom - we couldn't be any more connected without getting unzipped."

That comment was intended as a wink-and-nod joke, almost certainly. But House still implied that he and Wilson slept in the same bed. That happened in canon, so IMO the writers' intent doesn't really matter.

Of course the main difference in approach here is people who expect whatever pairing they ship to become canon vs. those who recognize that fandom is mostly about what you make of it interpretively. That's especially true for slash fans, considering the dearth of queer relationships in mass media, but I think het fans who expect (rather than just hope) their ships will get together/have sex are also Doing It Wrong. I am a wee bit judgmental for petty shit, I know, but I'm an admitted elitist about some things, so. *g*
